Williams, a resident of Manchester, Iowa, was 22 when he enlisted as Second Lieutenant, October 11, 1863, in the First Regiment Iowa Volunteer Infantry. The photograph is part of a group of images collected by Colonel John G. Hudson, First Iowa Infantry, African Descent, of federal soldiers and officers stationed at Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas, 1863-1864.
